A garage is a building, so it needs a municipal demolition permit and a dead hydro feed before it comes down. The Town of Whitby issues the permit, and heritage properties downtown go through the Town's heritage process first.

- If the garage has hydro, the feed is disconnected by a licensed electrician before demolition.
- Attached garages are structural work where the shared wall or roof ties into the house; the engineer's drawing governs.
