Toronto and its five former boroughs, then Peel, York, Durham and Halton. Each city page says who issues the permit there, what the housing stock does to the job, and how fast a bin arrives.
City of Toronto.
One permit office, Toronto Building, for the old city and all five former boroughs. Tight lots, shared driveways, laneway access and a residential demolition control process that asks what replaces the house before it comes down. Bins next day on most streets.
Peel Region.
Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon issue their own building and demolition permits. Peel runs from postwar Mississauga bungalows on wide lots to Caledon farms with barns and drive sheds, so the machine we send changes with the address.
York Region.
Nine municipalities from Thornhill to Lake Simcoe. Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham are tear-down and rebuild country; King, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Georgina bring rural lots, cottages and outbuildings. Each town or city issues its own permit.
Durham Region.
Pickering to Clarington along the 401, with Uxbridge and Scugog north on the moraine. Older stock in Oshawa and Ajax, waterfront lots in Pickering and Whitby, and rural sheds and barns north of Highway 7. Permits come from each local municipality.
Halton Region.
Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills. Estate lots and heritage districts by the lake, escarpment lots inland, and new subdivisions in Milton where the job is usually a garage, a pool or a basement, not a whole house.
