Ten years, one yard.
Breaker Demolition is a family company. Kam Oveisy started it ten years ago and still runs it. [Kam: first job story.] The yard is at 57 Larratt Lane in Richmond Hill. The machines sleep there. The bins come back there. Every crew member starts the day there.
Ten years is long enough to learn what a demolition job turns on. It is not the swing of the machine. It is the permit filed on time, the survey read before the first cut, the dust wall up before the first hammer, and the sweep at the end that nobody had to ask for.
Built job by job.
There was no fleet on day one. Kam built the equipment list the slow way, one machine at a time, each one bought because a job needed it and the next job would need it again. [Kam: first machine story.] Today Breaker owns the machines and equipment it works with. The machine on your job is ours, and so is the crew running it. Nothing waits on a rental counter.
The crew grew the same way. It is now more than twenty people, hired one at a time and kept because they work the way Kam works. That number matters on a tear-down, where enough hands have to be moving at once. It matters more on a strip-out inside an occupied house, where the job is careful before it is fast.
What we refuse to do.
Every contractor says they are careful. Here is what that means on a Breaker site.
We do not leave dust. Containment goes up at every doorway and return-air grille before anything comes out, and the floors are protected on the route to the bin.
We do not leave nails. The last hour of every job is the sweep: nails pulled, floors cleared, a walk-through with photos so the next trade starts on a clean site.
We do not leave a client guessing on the permit. If the job needs one, we say so at the site walk, we file it, and we book the locates and the disconnects that go with it. If it does not need one, we say that too.
We do not strip a suspect material without a survey. On a pre-1990 building the designated-substances survey comes first. If it finds asbestos, Breaker removes it under O. Reg. 278/05, and then the same crew carries on with the demolition.
Where we work.
From the yard in Richmond Hill the crew covers 29 municipalities: the City of Toronto and its former boroughs, Peel, York, Durham and Halton. Vaughan, Markham and Aurora are next door. The far ends of Halton and Durham are a longer drive and are scheduled as such. Every municipality has its own page with the permit authority named and the local notes written down.
Ten years in, the standard has not moved. Dust contained. Nails pulled. Permit named before the first cut. The site swept before the truck leaves.
