Chimney removal.
A chimney comes down one brick at a time from the top, through the roof, and if you want it gone entirely, down through every floor to the footing in the basement. Above the roofline is a roofer's job to close; through the house it is careful interior demolition with a hole in each floor and ceiling that the framer will close. We do the masonry and the mess; you decide how far down it goes.

Paper first.
- Taking a chimney down above the roofline usually needs no permit; check with the municipality where a furnace or water heater vents through it.
- Removing a chimney through the house is structural where floors and roof framing are cut and reframed: permit and an engineer's or designer's drawing.
- A furnace or water heater venting through the chimney has to be re-vented by a licensed HVAC trade before the chimney goes.
- Pre-1990 houses: chimney flue liners and fireplace insulation can contain asbestos. The survey comes first (O. Reg. 278/05).
